We Love Lapbooks!!

One of the things I have been so excited to try for homeschool is LAPBOOKS. I don't know who invented these, but they are all the rage among homeschoolers and they are so fun!! We just finished our first lapbooks and can't wait to start the next ones!

Griffin has been reading "Mr. Popper's Penguins" and doing a lapbook to go along with it. (All of the books Griffin has been assigned for summer school have movies, so after he finishes the book, we have movie night and watch the movie based on the book. So far we have done "James and the Giant Peach", "The Indian in the Cupboard", and "Mr. Popper's Penguins".)

A lapbook is a "unit study" which includes not only characters and story lines from the book, but also, in this case, encompasses facts about penguins, vocabulary, geography, science, math, etc.

Reagan did a lapbook as well based on the award winning book "Make Way For Ducklings" by Robert McClosky.

We learned that the Caldecott Medal is given every year for outstanding illustrations in a children's book and this book won it in 1942. We also learned all about Boston, ducks, and how cars/fashions/telephones were different back then. And we learned some new words, map skills, and facts.

We loved doing these and will be doing many more!!
